Cortina d'Ampezzo:
A little bit of geography - Ampezzo valley is in a
natural amphitheatre open to sunbeams and at the same time
protected, thanks to the natural wall of the Pomagagnon, which
at north, not only represents the marvellous scenery of the
town, but also protects it from wind. The valley extends from
Passo Falzarego to Passo Tre Croci, with the most beautiful
groups of the Eastern Dolomites all around:
Sorapiss, Antelao, Croda da Lago, Tofane, Croda Rossa and
Cristallo, which rise in a romantic frame made of woods, and
play with the shadows and the rosy colours of the rocks, in the
many hours of light.
This district is colour, a colour which fades with the fading of
a season into another: from the green of woods and meadows and
the blue of sky and lakes to the white of the peaks covered with
snow and the warm, golden colours of autumn.
Traditions and culture - Cortina is not only the
capital of holidays, but also a place of culture and tradition
which offers, both in summer and in winter, art exhibitions,
literary and cultural meetings at a very high level, and
important structures such as the "R. Zardini"
Palaeontology Museum, the Ethnographic Museum and the Rimoldi
picture gallery.
Pearl of the Dolomites - From century of Cadore in the
XV century, Cortina began its tourist growth in the second half
of the XIX century, becoming popular as main centre of the
Dolomites at the beginning of the XX century. With the passage
of time it won the name of "Pearl of the Dolomites" and became a
tourist resort worldwide known, loved by intellectuals, artists,
princes, offspring and representatives of the international
jet-set, who contributed to giving to Cortina it s particular
charm.
Entertainment - In a tourist season which lasts from
1st January till 31st December, any single moment gives the
tourists a little miracle:
from the classic "struscio" ( a walk along Corso Italia) to
shopping in the luxury boutiques in Corso Italia, from Folklore
to international sport events such as the International Female
World Cup of Alpine ski and the bob World Cup.
In summer the tourist offer has its hub in the beauty
of the mountains which allow infinite excursions. But at the
same time, the possibility of practising sport is unlimited and
varies from the more traditional ones, such as tennis, swimming,
golf horse riding and mountain bike to extreme waves such as
canyoning.
In winter, Cortina offers 110 km of downhill tracks
and 58 of cross-country ones, with never-ending carousels served
by 37 lifts.
For those who want to do something different there are many
other sports to practise, such as ice-skating, sledge, walks
with the "ciaspe", sleddog, ice-climbing or taxi bob.
