It’s located on the east side of the province of Bolzano, and includes the towns of San Candido/Innichen, Sesto/Sexten, Villabassa/Niederdorf, Braies/Prags and Dobbiaco/Toblach.
Dobbiaco/Toblach is in fact at the feet of two natural parks: on one side the "Parco Naturale Dolomiti di Sesto/ Naturpark Sexten Dolomiten", and on the other side the "Parco Naturale Fanes-Sennes-Braies/Naturpark Fanes-Sennes-Prags ".
Split into New Dobbiaco/Toblach and Old Dobbiaco/Toblach and at the north of the state road, this is a characteristic town with streets full of history and tradition, such as Graf Kunigl street, with its homes dating back from the 1500, or Crucis street , the oldest one in South Tyrol, with chapels dating back from 1519.
Typical restaurants with panelled ceilings and majolica stoves offer great local genuine dishes.
He stayed at the Trenkerhof in Carbonin Vecchia, where he wrote the ninth symphony, the tenth incomplete symphony, and "The song of the earth".
It is possible to visit the house where he wrote, and one room of the Mahler Residence.
At the Gustav Mahler Museum, it is also possible to visit the hut where the composer usually went to write.
Among the winter highlights, not to be missed is the DOBBIACO-CORTINA International cross-country skiing competition, which runs over 42 km along the old railway track that connected Calalzo to the Puster Valley.
